Inclusive NPCs Volume 3: Da'kuan Newton

We have come to another Inclusive NPCs entry. As a reminder, the idea behind this series is to help promote inclusivity in the gaming community by featuring a diverse cast in our games. But as not everyone finds it easy to create interesting, dynamic, and plausible minority characters for their stories. So I am providing a number of NPCs from marginalised communities to be freely used by anyone who wishes to do so. The stats for each are provided in the D20 system, GURPS, the original World of Darkness, and Fate Core.

This week's NPC is Da'kuan Newton. He is a black man who was born in an area that is known for being ethnically segregated. He grew up in poverty, but his parents emphasised the importance of compassion and good will. He never really learned to fight, so he has suffered many injuries at the hands of others, but he still manages to maintain a mostly optimistic view of his fellow humans. He's tough enough that he can usually survive a fight with no serious injuries, but his real gift is in his words. He is a skilled diplomat, and often is able to talk his way out of a fight.

Da'kuan tends to wear non-descript clothing, often of the hoodie variety (or whatever similar clothing is normal for the world in which you are using him). He has close-cropped hair and a battered but not unattractive face, which is almost always lit up with a radiant smile. If you're using him in a fantasy setting, he might make a good cleric, as long as he follows a religion that emphasise peace and harmony.

Inner Strength. +2 to defend with Will against someone trying to get inside your head – be it through psychic means or through extensive torture.
Master of the Mob. +2 to Rapport when dealing with a crowd or mob.
Smooth Over. You’re adept at stepping into a bad situation and dialing it down to something more reasonable. So long as you are not the direct reason someone is upset, your attempts to calm them down using your Rapport receive a +2 bonus.

Afterword

I hope I have done a good job of making someone who is not overly stereotypical, though he may come from a rather stereotypical background. More importantly, I hope that I have made a dynamic and interesting character that could be of potential use to you in whatever game you choose to use him. At the very least, it is my hope that he has inspired you to create similar minority characters to use in your game for the purpose of fostering a sense of welcoming inclusion in your games.
